Tahoe Truckee Fly Fishing

The Truckee River flows out of Lake Tahoe to the north. An iconic western freestone river, the Truckee turns eastward at the Town of Truckee and continues its journey to Pyramid Lake, Nv. Known for its finicky wild trout and exceptional views, the Truckee is a must for anglers of all experience levels. From Truckee to the state line is where I spend most of my time guiding anglers.

The Truckee is open year-round from Trout Creek to the state line with best fishing in late spring through mid-summer. Late summer can be a bit tough but things pick up again in the fall as water temperatures cool and the fish start pack on weight for the winter. Winter fishing can be good and is characterized by small flies and cold water. We fish a variety of techniques suited to the water types that we are fishing. Nymphing is most productive, but we do have some opportunities to fish dries to rising trout.

All fishing on the Truckee is done while walk/wading. Some spots require a bit more effort to get to but are worth the effort. Wading the Truckee can be challenging depending flows and location although there are areas that offer fairly straightforward access to and across the river. I teach proper wading skills and how to safely wade the Truckee at all flows. During times of high water we are limited to the bank and near shore waters. Summertime can find us fishing and wading up a boulder strewn pocket water section immersed to our waist in the cool water.

I have been guiding the Truckee since 2006. Let my experience guide you as we work together to achieve the goals you set for the day. Patience, knowledge and laughter are hallmarks of a day on the Truckee with Jay Clark Fly Fishing
